PASSION & POWERFUL FRUIT

Maracujá (passion fruit) is one of the most exuberant plants in the Brazilian forest, with large and showy flowers. In Brazil alone there are over 150 varieties of maracujá. Native to South America, it delighted Europeans who arrived in the country in the 16th century. Murucuiá, as called by indigenous peoples, fascinated and delighted all who experienced its aroma and flavor. This diverse and popular fruit is also known as a treasure trove. In addition to food, it has ornamental, cosmetic and pharmacological uses. Leaves and juice contain an active ingredient called Passiflorin, a natural sedative. Its tea is used to treat nervous arousal, anxiety, insomnia and menopausal disorders. When applied to cosmetics, due to the high concentration of essential fatty acids, it contributes to the restoration of the skin’s lipid layer, providing emollience and softness.

ONE FRUIT, A WHOLE CIRCLE OF LIFE

From the seeds, normally discarded by the industrialized juice industry, an oil with emollient properties is extracted. In 2009, in partnership with Natura, a local cooperative began to extract the oil from seeds. This enabled the partner to add greater value to production and generate a new source of income, employment and income for farmers. With access to new knowledge and technologies, the cooperative has also improved its production processes, ensuring greater quantity and quality in its products. Today, Natura works with over 700 families who harvest and source maracujá.
